Right in the middle of Omaha is historic Winter Quarters, Nebraska. This was the Mormon Pioneer's first settlement after being forced to leave Nauvoo, IL. After drudging across Iowa's mud in the spring with considerable delay, they decided they would not be able to make it all the way to the Rocky Mountains. They set up a settlement here for the winter.
They actually set up quite a few settlements, in and around the area, along the Missouri River, but Winter Quarters was the main settlement. Joseph is pointing to it on the map.
This side table was made and owned by my Great Great Great grandfather, Charles Coulson Rich.
Here's what the Winter Quarters log cabins looked like . . . with 2-3 families squished in each cabin.
After exploring the Visitor's Center, we went across the street to to the Pioneer Cemetery.
